Seward

Director Statement

When I was in the 3rd grade I joined a softball team with my best friend Jennifer. Barely knowing what the sport was, my sweet dad bought me a used glove and bat, taught me to swing, and the importance of keeping my eye on the ball. He even volunteered to be assistant coach to Jennifer’s dad.

A truly amazing summer. Playing with my friends, running the bases, getting ice-cream after.

Until the head coach started acting like we were training for the World Series. He yelled when a grounder made it through our legs, threw his clipboard down if we struck out more than once a game and most humiliating, berated his own daughter as she struggled to learn to pitch.

If my dad hadn’t been there to soften these outbursts and give us much needed cheerleading, I may have never played again.

In 2020, 54% of kids ages 6-17 played some kind of organized sport. It’s in the fabric of our culture and for good reason. Working on a team towards a tangible goal is (should be) a positive experience for kids. But we all know that some parents and coaches take things so far that it borders on abusive.

When Derek and Kristen brought me Seward I knew we had an opportunity to shine a light on the profound damage that can be caused by parents/coaches who push kids so far, they suffer life-long trauma.

It’s a hero’s journey of sorts. The broken character of Seward finds healing and inspires all of to step up and demand that kid's sport should first and foremost be to PLAY. It should always be for the love of the game.

Meeting Di

Before I head out to work in the morning I usually catch the local news to see how traffic was. I was alerted to the fact that there was going to be gridlock in midtown right in the middle of where I was going to be working. 57th and 5th. Gridlock in New york is unlike any other city congestion. Especially if it was to escort a high-profile figure throughout the city such as a diplomat or president. The UN was not too far from where the gallery was so this was a common occurrence. However, on this day I learned that Princess Diana was going to be in town on benefit and if the timing was right I might just get a glimpse of her.

The Society of Camera Operators

I'm excited to share the new publication of The Society of Camera Operators, which did a short stint on yours truly. This group is based in LA and is the only group that is not a union that helps support the role of camera operators in film and television.

People may wonder what path I'm on because they see me doing various roles in a production. My technical skills are still aligned with the camera department, just as they have for over 25 years. I went from AC to Camera Operator and am now DPing many projects. There are many layers to this path, and I don't live in a film-friendly region. So the journey to survive and be in the business is real and has taken me into a few other roles that I need to keep the balls rolling. The number two role I often own is producing.

Sibs Film

…and shortly after, she broke down. I decided to stop filming and take a break. Typically I would request that she and I work alone during the filming, but I was so glad her husband was there to comfort her. I could relate to her pain; it was similar to how I felt during 9/11 in NYC. Unbearable, lost, angry, tears flowing, hopeless, and anxiety-filled. I also had tears in my eyes. We both know this war was senseless.

Studio work an old stand by

I spent many years working on product shots in studios all over the country. So when it came time to shoot product video that was a no brainier. This was an especially fun project because I was asked to use all my tool that create dynamic camera movements. Slider orbitals and even a lighting gag was an excellent addition to this shoot.

The client has some very specific requests that I was able to fulfill with out renting anything and being able to deliver even more content than they had hoped for.
